James R Smith asked:
Sepp Blatter, the often controversial head of FIFA, suggested recently that the football transfer market is similar to that of the slave trade and that they as an organization would side with any player who wanted to leave his club. He seemed to pay little regard to anything or anyone else involved. This was said in light of the ongoing transfer saga of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United to Real Madrid.Sepp Blatter, the often controversial head of FIFA, has suggested recently that the football transfer market is similar to that of the slave trade and that they as an organization would side with any player who wanted to leave his club. Other controversial comments from Blatter include the one time that he said that the only way to make women’s soccer any more entertaining was for them to wear tighter shorts! Demonstrating his ability as a master of the throw away remark, that often open up a hotbed of discussion.
To liken the football transfer market to the slave trade is simple stupidity. Footballers, particularly high profile footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo are the furthest people from slaves as is possible. Ronaldo only 22, is already a multi-millionaire, he has everything that is humanly imaginable in life and his future is financially secured whether or not he ever kicks a football again. You don’t need to be a keen historian to realize that the slave trade of the 18th century was far from the luxurious lifestyles that footballers of the modern era lead – casting a large degree of scrutiny on Blatter’s comments.
This transfer saga that has been ongoing ever since United won the Champions League in May has not gone away; it could even be argued that the whole charade has cast a shadow over United’s double winning achievements. Ronaldo has done nothing other than fan the flames of controversy, causing uncertainty, dislike and disrespect towards him from his army of Manchester United fans. Can you imagine what might have happened if ‘Chicken George’ suggested to his slave mates on the plantation that he wanted to move to a new slave owner down the road? A flogging that’s what!
If of course this Ronaldo nonsense continues then perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson should get the whip out and punish him for disloyalty, especially if it’s the only way to control him.
When he arrived at Old Trafford, Ronaldo was a good player with plenty of potential, since then he has matured to become one of the very best players in the world. He has won several trophies including the Champions League and has had the total support and protection of Ferguson, his team and his fans throughout his stay at the club. For him to express his disloyalty so publicly, is an insult to any real football fan, but then for Blatter to express sympathy for him and liken him to a slave is beyond belief and adds salt to a wound that is becoming worse, not only to United supporters but to all British football fans.
Despite the ongoing Soap Opera at Old Trafford, Manchester United remain firm favorites to retain their Premier League crown in the football betting odds for the 2008/2009 season. However, if Ronaldo was to depart for pastures new, namely Madrid; then Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all believe that they stand a realistic chance of knocking United off their perch, as replacing a player who scored 42 goals last season is no easy task.
